#8800, Jardín del Eden

“#8800 Jardín del Edén” (#8800. Garden of Eden) is a theater play about the story fragments of Jorgelino Vergara, also known as El Mocito, the young waiter of Manuel Contreras’ torture house. Jorgelino arrived to Santiago at the age of 14, looking for new life opportunities. At the end, he became involved in a torture center that had no record, until 2007, when he told the story.

The staging of the play shows an obscure imaginary, reconstructing the tale of a man who could have changed the whole story of Chile. ¿Guilty or innocent? ¿Murder and accomplice or victim? ¿A young man in the wrong place?

Maybe all of these contradictions are El Mocito.

The sound design of the play “#8800 Jardín del Eden” was inspired by the new torture machines brought by the Military Regime in Chile. The electricity sounds of torture devices are contrasted with classic and dark compositions, representing the luxury of the new born military aristocracy. The violence in dictatorship was completely disguised by media, mellowing all the atrocities that happened in these torture houses with the mass laugh. Also, it is known that in these torture centres, the military and special forces played music loudly so that the neighbourhood could not listen the tortured screams.
